Clinton: I’m Your Girl

When asked, Clinton affirmed that, as she told the labor unions, she can say to the GLBT audience: “I’m your girl.”

Hooray for putting yourself on our side.

But, um, Hillary? As a sister Wellesley woman, I’m a little distressed to hear you refer to yourself as a “girl.” From our first year, “woman” was drilled into us.

Wellesley alums everywhere are clicking their tongues.

  1. Now, its interesting that some of you you comment on Senator Clinton's attire. Her "girl" comment was not semantics. It was a strategic statement to balance herself. She gets to play the game of gender politics. She is subject to rules that men in her field arent subject to, because they MADE the rules. It will be interesting, however, to note how men will need to balance themselves in debate with Senator Clinton. If you slam her in debate, it had best be done in a way that doesnt make you look like a big, mean, imposing man, but hopefully for them, in a way that makes her look like a silly, weak, girl. Seriously, watch how they interract. Its fascinating.
  2. Was it LOGO or the cable company that dropped the ball on scheduling?? The show is listed at 9pm pacific time, I had the dvr set in case I got busy with work... I turned the tv on twenty minutes early to be sure and catch the beginning, only to find the damn thing was almost half way over. It seems to happen often with LOGO. Someone needs to get it together.
  3. It is more obvious than ever that Hillary is the most qualified candidate for the job. She has been there, lived it, and can deal with it. She was right along side Clinton during all the crap and she stuck it out in a very dignified way. Her background in law is a valuable asset, as is her real-life experience. She adds a much needed glimpse of humanity which is something we don't get to see in politics very often if at all. I just feel bad that the Bush idiot has undone all of her husband's good things and will have to clean up a real mess before she can go forward, but I trust her and I think she will make good decisions. She is definitely my girl! Don't get caught up in petty semantics, it is lame.
  4. Clinton Rules! She makes the most logical sense. As much as we want marriage, civil rights, etc they have to get thru hoops first. It's a complete strategy first of all not to scare the small and ignorant minded, also dealing with those evil republican idiots that want our demise. I'm also leaning toward her for her fiery energy to accomplish other issues not related to tonight's deal. God help me vote for the right candidate, and never let me give up on hope on this country ever again. I will forever be scared from shrubs damage...
  5. Personally, I enjoyed the passion and conviction with which Representative Kucinich and Former Senator Gravel spoke with. Their frank discussion unforatunately makes some people uncomfortable because they are talking about feelings and beliefs instead of dancing around questions and issues. Gravel said it really well tonight, "A good politician can tell you to go to hell right to your face and they'll make you look forward to the trip." I think there are a lot of "good politicians" here.

I am sick of hearing about the whole civil union thing. It is utter nonsense. It is not the same, perhaps it does come down to a simple fact of semantics, but when you label some thing one way for one group of people and you label it a different way for another, they don't ever really get around to being the same. Maybe it will end up needing another Brown vs Board of Education to end this round of seperate and unequal bologne.

Clinton's use of the word "girl" is her way of trying to play to middle America and also trying to dumb herself down because she is seen as a strong woman and using the word "girl" to describe herself makes her seem less imposing. Quit it. Just call yourself a woman or a lady if you want to be more proper. None of the male candidates are going around calling themselves little boys! Lose the jacket though - it's not flattering.

I loved Alec Mapa's post-forum commentary. Governor Richards really was an Eeyore tonight. He was not prepared and should have done some research before going on are - especially about his mishap on the radio show.
  6. Fort Worth Stockyards smell of BS - there's lots of cattle there. Tonight LA smelled of BS (I could smell it through the net) & there wasn't a cow in site! The only two that seemed honest & forthright were Dennis & Barack. I feel that all but Dennis look at the GLBT as 2nd class citizens. "=, but entrance in the rear only."
  7. I am hispanic.....very disappointed with Richardson...now I know my guy.. clinton, edwards, richardson and obama with more of the same.....Dennis Kuccini is for Full equality for the glbt comunity....this is our man.....
  8. Come on you guys. Let's all admit it to ourselves, full marriage isn't going to come immediately. It's not going to come easily, either. Half the country is fighting. I think Clinton is approaching it sensibly; she's for us, but if she goes all out she'll lose the Presidency and not be able to do ANYTHING for us. It's a strategy used by many Presidents before.

Not to mention she's got the experience in other areas, specifically foreign affairs, which we need badly right now.
  9. Gay people have to be real about where the rest of America is on issues or they can continue to be jackasses and cause Republicans to get elected. Understand that it only takes one more conservative activist judge on to the Supreme Court to recriminalize gay sexual acts and the right has two cases working their way up to the courts now. Hillary Clinton stands the absolute best chance of getting the nomination and winning. Look at the polls, even the folks who think favorable about Obama won't vote for him.
  10. as much as i want to favor Kucinich or Gravel for their "complete" support, there's no way they can win. Clinton was honest and charismatic. i get the sense that she wants to support gay marriage but knows that now isn't the right time. she's just being strategic which, at this point in history, is the way to go. she's being smart and picking her battles.
  11. Yes, Maria Helena (prior comment), Senator Clinton fully understands the irony in using the word "girl" in this context as do other women of the baby-boomer generation.

While I appreciate the combination of idealism and cynicism in the comments of those who want a candidate with purer liberal credentials (a la Ralph Nader in 2000), let's face it: Sen. Clinton is a pragmatist. Her private positions will always outstrip her public ones. She will nonetheless accomplish more than those who stick their necks out. I want a Democrat in the White House more than I want ideological purity and Sen. Clinton has the right combination of smarts, connections, coalition building ability, knowledge and experience to do the job once there.
  12. Now that we know who is who......the truth is that I always knew....Denis kuccini is our guy....he's for FULL equality for us.....dont be fooled guys..we have to support....we should support people whit courage and dennis kuccini is the man.......
  13. Steffi,

Yes. I think Hillary Clinton has forgotten what it's like for "women" in the working world. This is all very disappointing.
  14. I think we should be happy that:

    1) 6 of the 8 Democratic presidential candidates even attended this forum, and;

    2) They will speak out concerning gay rights and civil unions and equality.

This is the first Presidential election in the United States history that a major candidate will speak proudly for gay rights. Bill Clinton couldn't do it, and Al Gore and John Kerry simply didn't do it. The race is going to be Clinton, Obama, and Edwards, and truly - Clinton is leading by very much - and either way, they support civil unions and our rights and speak for us. No candidate has ever done that. Can't we be proud of that? I think so.
  15. She can get the job done - not overemotionally, but with practical experience and sincere compassion. If I'm a boy, surely she's a girl!
  16. Hillary has to know that 'girl' is offensive. I am a manager in a company an I constantly have to fight the 'girls in the office' vs the men. It is very demeaning.
  17. I'm trying not to be a 1-issue voter, but I can't get over the fact that if the candidates who are only for civil unions really "got" that they support millions of Americans' having their very own special purple water fountains, but who can't drink from the regular fountains available to everyone else, they'd see that separate isn't equal, and never will be. I can't vote for someone who believes we "aren't ready" for equality. If our President can't stand up for full equality, why should anyone else? Dennis gets my vote on ALL issues.
  18. I just finished reading "Living History" by Ms. Clinton. She's always had what she describes as "close" gay friends and associates to lunch with at the governor's mansion or to share tea and toast with at the white house, etc. A fact which makes her moderate stance on marriage v. civil unions that much more confusing. She's a politico to the core, whether she wants us to think that she's our "girl" or not.
  19. I am SO sick of candidates who "ride the middle". Speak your mind!! Don't dance around an answer to a difficult question. If you lose some votes, you lose some votes. But if you "ride the middle" and try to please everyone, you aren't showing any passion or reason for any of us to vote for you. Don't say what you think we want to hear, say what you feel!
As highly unlikely as it is for Kucinich or Gravelle to get the dem nomination, I must admit their honesty was quite refreshing.
  20. Hillary Clinton knows full well what she's doing by referring to herself as a "girl."

A girl going after the right wing?? Well, maybe that "is" what she means. I'm sure they are trembling in their boots.

Sounds like the "right wing" (aka Rupert Murdoch) wins again.

Thanks, Hillary. "You are a heckuva gal."
  21. Matthew Stensrud - few comments up! That helps! I guess you are right! It is important that she gets into office first. I submit to that fact!
  22. She's the best gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrl for the job!
She's got what it takes to move us forward and that's all that matters. Strength, passion, compassion, okay her stylist has got to do something about her jackets but she is all that!
  23. She is totally my girl. She spoke well and knew the issues and she was fun! I liked her. I liked her a lot. I felt like she could be my best friend. No kidding. She says she wants gay marriage and she won't get elected President. That is the simple fact. To be personally honest, I think she wants it but knows she can't say it. At least for a few more years.

    Love her.
  24. after kucinich, she was my favorite.
  25. "I'm your girl"
Uh, how many managed to overlook the intentional irony in that phrase?

No one thinks Hillary is a female under the age of majority--including and especially Hillary.

I'm a big ol Lezbian Feminist (from decades and decades ago)--and there are moments when I use the term, as do a number of my Sistahs.
  26. Please someone help Hillary with her body language and self presentation!
  27. Wow! Hillary was "my girl" and I was so sure of her. After meeting her before she was first lady and after, I was stunned by the "marriage" issue. She's such a tough cookie! Is this just a way for her to become president? Mike Gravel impressed me the most! Now I am baffled and confused as well as educated by the programming tonight.
  28. Will someone PLEASE work with Hillary on her body language and self presentation???? She could use help in this area!
  29. it should be "not your girl," not "you're"
  30. stop giving Clinton free advertising
She is the least gay friendly candidate.
  31. give me a break you guys - get serious. Do you want someone that can win against the Republicans or not. Go ahead and vote for Dennis or Mike or even Barack - then watch what happens in the general election. Do you want the White House or not. Even as LGBT people, we CANNOT be one issue voters!
  32. so that's all it takes? she can say what amounts by any means to "more of the same" but tag "i'm your girl" on it and you're on board?

i really, really hope that was pity applause.
  33. She's not my girl
Clinton is to Bush as Pepsi is to Coke.
  34. She's my girl...she just has the total package...Smart...temperance....patience....thinks before she speaks....presidential....knows how to get dems to the polls and vote....when to push certain issues and when it's time to wait....You the MAN....MAAM
  35. she's not my girl
  36. she meant, "guhrrrl!"

now, about that set. BAD. we need a stadium full of people!
