Never have been a fan of the Cheney clan. First there’s Daddy Cheney. Hard to respect a man who still doesn’t think his vote to keep Nelson Mandela in jail was a bit off. Then there’s Sister Mary. She got paid a whole lot of money to write a book that no one really cared about. Finally Mother Lynne. Who can forget her denial of Mary’s woman loving ways at the start of campaign 2000? To be fair though from all accounts the Cheney’s love their daughter (and new grandchild) and even think same-sex marriage should be left to the states. That’s pretty progressive for Republicans and while a Cheney will never get my vote, it shows good breeding to be fair when talking about your political enemies.
Mater Lynne has new memoir out and she’s doing the talk show rounds. She made it to The Daily Show a few weeks ago where she presented Jon Stewart with a Darth Vader doll (is it me or did Jon looked scared during the whole interview?). This weekend Mrs. Cheney appeared on the NPR program Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me and she rocked.
During her research for Blue Skies, No Fences she found out her husband and Barack Obama are distant relatives. She was asked about that revelation and with timing Richard Pryor would have been proud of she said:
“Senator Obama has continued to criticize my husband even after I’ve told him that he really needs to keep it in the family.”
Call me soft but that’s funny. Anyone who can make a joke at her own expense is a-okay in my book. Won’t get my vote but I would buy the first round.
