Clinton’s Minions Are Everywhere

Man. What is the deal with CNN and debate questions? At last night’s GOP Keith H. Kerr, a retired general, asked the candidates about “Don’t Ask, Don’ Tell.” Nothing wrong with that of course but Kerr ain’t your average citizen asking questions to possible leaders of the free world. Instead he’s shilling for Hillary Clinton’s return to the White House.

After the debate it was revealed that Kerr is a co-chair of “Veterans and Military Retirees for Hillary.” In 2004, Kerr also was part of a veteran’s committee for John Kerry’s sorry presidential run. Rather strange pedigree for a guy who described himself as a member of the Log Cabin Republicans. A Log Cabin-er working for Kerry and Clinton to be elected? Yeah right!

As for the candidates and DADT? Come on now. These guys are playing to their base and were not going to say anything provocative or worth listening to. Mitt Romney did his standard “back in the day I thought the policy was wrong but now I realize that won’t get me your vote so today I’m saying something different” routine. John McCain gave the military its appropriate props then said DADT works fine. I wonder if McCain has ever spoken to folk who have been booted? Give the good people at SLDN a call Senator McCain. They might give you some useful information.

By the way: how much do you want to bet that Clinton is chewing out some poor operative for this?

  1. To Matthew:

Read the Uniform Code of Military Justice. If two consenting gay men (even if they're married in Massachussets) have sex together in the privacy of their own home (not the shower), they are subject to court marshall. Clinton was clear that her standard of behavior was the Uniform Code. The only gays that meet that standard are completely celibate. Clinton forces us to lie once again to stay in the Military.
  2. When will we have had enough? Perhaps never, after all, we endorse incrementalism(the trannies have to wait, so will effeminate or butch appearing or acting people, etc...) and cheer when candidates tell us "I don't think of myself as against gay marriage, I like to think that I am very positive on civil unions." Well, it isn't enough to grant us second class status, as the New Jersey experience has shown. We want, and we deserve as citizens, adoption rights, marriage, and the host of benefits and rights denied us. We are fools to cheer anyone who denies us these and offers us some tidbit from the straight table that enshrines us into law as "less than." We can withold our support, vote only for candidates who support our equality and sooner or later the others will have to come around.
  3. Right wing thugs like Buchanan, Clinton supporter Rupert Murdoch and sows like Frau Coulter put the neo in neo-Nazi. They have no right commenting on questions pertaining to elections, even the bogus fixed elections we have in the US. Particularly a chickenshit chickenhawk like Buchanan. Like most leaders of the twin parties, he prefers to let others do the fighting.

It’s not too late for Buchanan to fight. I’m sure that Blackhawk would hire him; they’re probably behind on their torture and murder quotas because of all the scandals. Maybe the Iraqi resistance will get word of his arrival and arrange for a proper welcome. It'll probably be more ka-boomba than koom-by-yah.

I wonder why Kerr says the bigoted brass of the armed forces is now “professional enough” to end the bigotry of the Clinton’s DADT. Some are, but most are not. Bigotry in the military will have to be suppressed by harsh discipline, revocation of rank and time in the military brig in Leavenworth. If the Democrats wanted to end DADT they could do it tomorrow, take a break and defund the war. Then after dinner they could impeach Cheney and Bush. Don’t hold you breath.

That includes notorious gay bashing bigots like General Peter Pace, until very recently Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hillary Clinton’s pigheaded refusal to condemn Pace even scandalized the gutless wonders in the HRC who called on her and Obama to repudiate his contemptible bigotry. When they finally broke their silence it was a superficial slap on the wrist. Both declined to call for his ouster. Why isn’t he in Leavenworth?

I’m glad Kerr is openly against DADT, although it would have been more helpful it he’d said so before he retired on a general officers pension. Kerr is a general and generals don’t have much in common with privates. In the same way Clinton, Frank, Pelosi and Feinstein don’t have much in common with GLBT folk or working people.

The lethal bigotry or the military brass doesn’t kill generals, but it did kill gay rankers like able seaman Allen Schindler and shortly after DADT was passed it killed private Barry Winchell.

  4. The double-speak of Hillary is disgusting. I don't for the life of me understand the rush of GLB to support this corporate lapdog. Choosing her for the Dem candidate is a sure fire way of making many of us gays vote for someone else, regardless of party or no party.
  5. I think when Clinton said one should have good behavior she meant that you can be openly gay, bring your partner and/or family to military family functions, BUT when you’re on duty, don’t make others feel uncomfortable. I have friends who would like to serve in the military but they would also try to see how many people they could hook up with while showering or something. I don’t think her comment was out of line. People who serve in the military are service men and women who are protecting our country. They should ALL be on their best behavior. All rules and regulations should apply to all. One thing I didn’t understand was why no one asked this question. Why is the military professional enough to work with women in the military but not professional enough to work with a gay man or women?

  6. Being a part of another campaign, even from another party, does not negate one's citizenship. Colonel Kerr is an American and he asked candidates for president about something that's important to him. There's every possibility that one of the men on stage could be leading the country 13 months from now and he's interested in konwing where they stand on a key issue. So what if he's supporting another candidate. I suspect that every single questioner is currently supporting one of the many people running. If they're allowed to ask questions, then so should Kerr.
  7. I think the GLBT community really misunderstands Clinton's approach to Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Last week, in Tama, Iowa, Clinton very clearly spelled out her policy.

    Quoted from 365Gay.com:

Clinton said she believed all service members, including gays, must be expected to observe the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which determines appropriate behavior.

"I feel strongly that if someone wants to serve their country, if they're a patriot, if they'll comply with the code of military justice and have appropriate behavior, they should not be disqualified simply because they are gay," she said.

Notice Clinton's carefully crafted doublespeak. She says we shouldn't be disqualiified because we are gay, but she stands by the "behavior" mandated by the Uniform Code of Military Justice--which in 925 Article 125 defines same sex relationships as punishible by court marshall. Clinton would not have used the word "behavior" if she really intended to completely repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell. She merely wants to elevate it to a new, more cruel level. "Be openly gay in the military," she seems to say to us, "but don't ACT gay, don't BE gay, don't bring your same sex partner to the platoon Christmas party. And whatever you do, don't have sex, because the Uniform Code of Military Justice forbids it!"

This "You can be gay as long as you don't act on it" is the same policy held by the Catholic Church and Brigham Young University, and we know how well gays and lesbians are welcomed in those institutions.

Read between Clinton's lines. She is focused on BEHAVIOR and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. In this regard she is not a friend of GLBT people. She seems to be repeating the old song of her husband, "Vote for me and I'll make it all better," only to tell us after the election that it just doesn't work to change the Uniform Code or to ignore behavior." It's Deja Vu all over again!
  8. Although I agree from a journalistic and strategic political perspective it was a dumb move to have Kerr ask this question, there was no malicious intent. Kerr really cares about this issue (and damn good for him) so he is politically involved. He never said he was a republican. He is one of 50 co-chairs of one of at least a dozen sub-committees on Clinton's campaign. I doubt anyone on the Clinton campaign knew what he was doing. It seems like a guy who really cares about an issue making his point any way possible. Let's not crucify the guy.
