“The Gay Agenda” Vlog - What Did Obama’s “Gay Marriage” Quip Mean?

420×300_gayagendamarch27.jpg
John & Jay are very serious this week. Until the discussion turns to “Grab & Grin,” Barney Frank and kiddie pools. Enjoy!

In this week’s “Gay Agenda,” Jennifer Vanasco and John Polly try to figure out what “Gay marriage doesn’t matter” (paraphrasing there…) means when spoken by a Democratic presidential candidate.

Plus, why it sucks to be gay come tax time, and the truth behind the candidate’s first jobs. Who was the kiddie pool enforcer? Who hurt themselves scooping ice cream?

  1. Ed stuck in the Midwest, You have every right to support for president whomever you choose to support, but I would urge you to make that an informed decision.

In explaining her opposition to same-sex marriage, Hillary Clinton has said that "Marriage has got historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time, and I think a marriage is as a marriage always has been, between a man and a woman."

Hillary has repeatedly stressed her moral opposition to same-sex marriage based on what she sees as religious proscriptions.

And while I would agree with you that homophobia and misogyny are inextricably linked, it simply doesn't follow that electing a woman president will "automatically" help the cause of LGBT rights; consider the example of Margaret Thatcher, who actually pushed Clause 28 through the British parliament in order to prohibit the 'promotion' of homosexuality by government authorities -- a statute that the otherwise problematic Tony Blair (a man, incidentally) led parliament in repealing.
  2. I am sorry to spoil this but Senator Hillary Clinton will be our next President. I feel its the time for a woman to become President our United States.

Now when it comes to gay issues, we are not such a united bunch of States. When candidates like Barack Obama publicly say, "as a Christian I will never accept gay marriage," it makes me cringe that people are voting for this "so far left liberal that he is back on the right."

Obama will do _nothing_ for the gay community and is just pandering to the queer base when he makes statements like this one.

Why don't the LGBT see that with Sen. Hillary Clinton as our President it will automatically help our cause. Lifting up the status of women in our society will directly affect LGBT rights - period. We need to recognize that homophobia is so deeply connected with sexism.

It's time to change who wears the pants in the White House and I am speechless why queers would ever vote for Barack and his Christian nut-wing flavor of "we will never accept you gays so let's leave it up to the States to decide what to do with ya I have bigger more important issue to discuss." He fundamentally has faith-based issues with us so why are we trying to further his voice?

Great if you live on the coasts, but I am screwed here in the Midwest.
  3. I love the gay agenda...

  4. Contrary to your assumption, Steve, my criticism of Obama has nothing to do with Clinton. I don't like either of them. I'm not playing the Democratic crap shoot anymore.

You want to choose between two evils, thats your problem.

Oregon's equal rights laws are under attack (check out other posts at this blog that talk about it) so it is a fair observation that Obama's ambiguous remarks can be interpreted as either dismissive or supportive.

That isn't good enough. In fact, it is exactly the kind of baiting that he talks about in his glorious speech on race. He can't say it is wrong to use race to gin up votes with any credibility when he is using sexual minorities in the same way.
  5. This is powerful rhetoric. I've been dealing with this issue in Iowa extensively, and a whole lot of people on the positive are starting to take the stance "I can't believe we're still talking about this." I would read his comments as positive with rhetorical considerations.

Of course one may hear what one wants. He's not a superhero, and he does have to handle the fact that a majority of 'mericans (the people that vote for him) don't support marriage.
  6. Oregon has gay-inclusive civil rights legislation and civil unions, so "foaming at the mouth with legislative gay bashing" seems ridiculous hyperbole from someone with no sense of perspective.

Sorry, Casey and Patrick, Hillary Clinton will never, ever be president, nor does she deserve to be after her cynical war vote and egregious, racist behavior during the primary campaign. It's too bad that some gays care only about gays.
  7. Right on, Casey. Oregon has been foaming at the mouth with legislative gay bashing lately. It just adds to the case that Obama wasn't being passively supportive...and makes him sound patently dismissive. Why can't he clarify his statements - and his support - and do it in a state like Oregon that is acting against the equality of LGBT Americans.

Furthermore, regarding this weeks VLOG - you suggest that McCain should call himself the Florida Flame. Actually, Charlie Crist already has that title...
  8. Hey Guys,

Let's not forget where Barack Obama was speaking, Oregon. Obama knew exactly what he was saying and doing. As we know, Barack Obama is not for gay marriage. For him to have a love fest with Melissa (I've done nothing for gays) Etheridge is not going to change anything.

So you know, my sister was at a rally of Obama's in Iowa, where he did the same thing. I was at rally of his in Arizona, again he made the same comments.

My partner, who use to work with Michelle Obama at University of Chicago Hospitals. Said, Michelle is very anti gay.

Why is the controversy within the DNC party re gays, not being discussed here. Howard Dean's comments, the Donna Brizalle issue should be a point of serious interest.
